I watched through the window as Abby crossed my lawn over to her own, slipping through her back door without a backward glance in my direction. I was confused by how abruptly she’d left, by the look on her face after she’d pulled away from me. She’d seemed uncomfortable and distant, almost cold when she met my eye. It had happened so suddenly, just after she’d kissed me, as if the kiss itself had changed her mind.

I shook my head, pinching the bridge of my nose. This was why I never got involved with women. Somehow I always managed to do something wrong, to send them away. Usually it was that I worked too much, got too into my job and didn’t come home enough. Or when I was home, I couldn’t focus. There had never been a woman who had captivated my attention enough to keep my mind off work. Before Abby, anyway. Since the first day I’d seen her, work had been at the back of my mind, nowhere near the forefront. What I’d thought about, for the most part, was her. It was going to be even worse now that I’d tasted her, fucked her, claimed her with my body. Especially if she wanted nothing to do with me, if she thought she’d made a mistake by letting me touch her.

I went upstairs and got into the shower, rinsing the smell of her sweat and her sex from my body. It seemed like I could still feel her skin against mine, like she was still touching me. I got out of the shower and got ready, lying down in my bed as I waited for her to show up. I didn’t know what to do or how to respond to her when she did get here. I didn’t know what to expect, either, and the thought of it made me nervous. More nervous than getting my stuff back from a bunch of kids—even if they did have guns. I had to get that watch back. It was something that had been in my family for generations, something that was worth more than anything to me.

Abby showed up right at eight and I opened the door without knowing what to expect. She was wearing jeans and a t-shirt and looked good even in that. I invited her in and she didn’t brush against me on her way through the door this time, but moved past me and made her way into the kitchen.

“So we’re just going to go to the bar,” she said, not meeting my eye. She was looking away from me, anywhere but at my face. Her body was closed off, arms crossed over her chest. None of her usual cheekiness was in the room with us; that flirty grin that had seduced me so quickly was gone. I missed it already, missed her smile and the way she teased.

“And then what?” I asked her. She still wouldn’t meet my eye.

“I’ll go in the back and grab your stuff.
